NOVEMBER 2017 NEI recently celebrated the ribbon cutting of Auburn Court Apartments in Cambridge, MA. Owner Homeowners Rehab Inc. and architect Davis Square Architects were also present at the ceremony celebrating the addition of 9 new residential units as well as the completion of the occupied rehab of 77 existing units within the community.
Located in Brookline Place within the University Park campus at MIT, HRI originally developed Auburn Court in an effort to provide more affordable housing opportunities in an especially high-cost community like Cambridge. In late 2016, NEI General Contracting began improvements and an expansion of the mixed-income community.
The $12.1 Million project funded by MassHousing and MHIC involved upgrades to 77 units across eight mid and low-rise buildings, including upgraded kitchens, bathrooms, heating and air conditioning systems, and electrical. All buildings also received new windows, added thermal insulation in exterior walls, new fiber cement siding, and PVC trim throughout.
Eight of the new units created were housed in a new four-story, LEED Platinum, wood-framed building featuring wood flooring in units, ceramic tile in bathrooms, and a solar hot water heating system and air conditioning. The ninth new unit was converted from an existing office space. Now complete, the project totals 86 units- 55 of which are affordable.
Auburn Court is located close to public transit, educational institutions, and other amenities, providing convenient access to community resources for residents. NEI is happy to have partnered with HRI to create and preserve affordable opportunities for low and moderate-income households in the neighborhood.
