NEI  and Urban Edge has begun work to rehabilitate 82 units of occupied, multi-family, affordable rental housing in Roxbury and Jamaica Plain. Construction started in January 2012 on the historic preservation and green renovation of the 82 of its “Limited Partnership Apartments” within 10 buildings at seven different sites across the two neighborhoods. “This project keeps our promise that all the housing developed and owned by Urban Edge will remain a growing asset to its residents, their neighborhoods and the City of Boston,” Noah Maslan, Urban Edge’s real estate director said in a statement. www.urbanedge.org/

Urban Edge’s Wardman Apartments property suffered a devastating fire on Monday, October 17th.  NEI is assisting Urban Edge with stabilization of the property.  In order to help the many families who have lost all of their belongings, Urban Edge has set up a Wardman Emergency Fire Relief Fund.  If you would like to make a donation to the fund, go to www.urbanedge.org, click on the MAKE A CONTRIBUTION link and select Wardman Emergency Fire Relief Fund from the drop down menu.

NEI renews their support of Caritas Communities as an Underwriter of this year’s 26th Annual Dinner to celebrate more than a quarter century of providing affordable housing for working poor and homeless individuals.  Caritas Communities serves the housing needs of low-income individuals through the development and long term management of affordable rooming houses. NEI will begin the 32 unit Highland Terrace Project with Chelsea Neighborhood Development (CND) this fall. Highland Terrace will be the link between CND’s successfully completed Janus Highland project (41 affordable rental units) and Box Works Homes (26 mixed income condominium units). An existing industrial facility on site will be demolished and replaced with modern, affordable family housing.

Pine Street Inn’s Upton Street Project, scheduled to open in fall 2011, will provide permanent housing to 18 homeless men and women. The tenants of 40-42 Upton Street will have the opportunity to rebuild their lives within a structured and supportive home environment, with in-house case management and resident supervision.

As part of Chelsea Neighborhood Developers’ expansion into Revere, Walden House is a dramatic renovation of a historic fire station that CND acquired from the city of Revere in 2010. The building is being redeveloped into seven apartments and a community room, while respecting its historic details. The apartments have one or two bedrooms, reserved for households with at least one member who is at least 55 years old, and are available to those earning under either 60 percent or 50 percent of the area median income.

The Upton Street Team, including representatives from The Pine Street Inn, The Planning Office of Urban Affairs (POUA), and NEI General Contracting met with Union Park Neighborhood Association (UPNA). The meeting was successful in establishing a line of communication between the UPNA and the development group who will be working on the upcoming project at 40-42 Upton Street.

A “comprehensive neighborhood revitalization plan” involving new mixed-income housing, public green spaces and parks, was achieved through public-private partnership investments made by Mitchell Properties, Chelsea Neighborhood Developers, the City of Chelsea and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Housing Partnership (MHP) recently committed $2.82 million in permanent rental financing to help non-profit developer Homeowner's Rehab, Inc. construct 40 units of affordable rental housing on Putnam Avenue in Cambridge. NEI was awarded the construction contract in February 2011 and will deliver the completed project spring 2012. The project will be LEED Gold certified when completed.

6 Fort Street is a 34-family rental residential development in Quincy, MA. The project will represent the adaptive re-use of a partially historic building in a transit-oriented, Downtown Quincy Center location. Boston Harbor Island Alliance, a non-profit organization that brings programs and amenities to the Boston Harbor Islands, has announced the unveiling of a new play structure on Georges Island. The play structure, a donation from NEI General Contracting, of Braintree, replicates the island’s historic Civil War era fortress, Fort Warren. “Boston Harbor Island Alliance is excited to have the new play structure on Georges Island,” said Tom Powers, president, Boston Harbor Island Alliance. “NEI’s generous donation will help to enhance visitor enjoyment on the Harbor Islands for years to come.   Union Parker Press Story..         Wicked Local Story..

 

NEI Proudly supports the Mel King Institute. The Mel King Institute is a collaborative enterprise that leverages the resources of many institutions including MACDC, LISC, MassHousing, NeighborWorks America, Massachusetts Housing Partnership, Community Economic Development Assistance Corporation, Department of Housing and Community Development and several CDCs. Partnering with public agencies, non-profits, universities, private consultants and experts will allow us to avoid duplication within the sector and provide higher quality training at a lower cost.
